After upgrading to a newer version of Mac OS X (Yosemite 10.10 and El Capitan 10.11) or macOS (Sierra 10.12 and High Sierra 10.13), you may end up getting an annoying new pop-up message whenever you start your computer. It says, “To use the java command-line tool, you need to install a JDK.” It asks you to click “More Info” and visit the JDK (Java Developer Kit) download website.
Java for OS X follows the “Write once, run anywhere” tag line of the Java runtime and this means that developers do not need to make any type of adaptations or modifications to their Java apps in order for them to run on a Mac computer. Because Java for OS X is so easy installable and the operating. Grab a Yosemite Compatible Java Version from Apple: Apple offers an (older) Yosemite compatible. More annoyingly, after clicking through to Oracle’s Java.com to “Download Java for Mac OS X” and installing it, you still get the error! Here’s why, and how to fix it. Here’s why, and how to fix it.
The reason you’re receiving this message is due to the removal of Java support in newer versions of OS X for security reasons. Older software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator requires legacy Java support. Without a compatible Java command-line tool for these software, you’ll get this pop-up every time you turn on your Mac computer.
When you visit the download website to update Java, you find that the issue isn’t resolved! You’re still getting the same pop-up. This isn’t a complicated issue to fix, but it is an indirect one. The problem is that you’re not being routed to the correct download website when you click “More Info.”
Apple could have remedied this issue by programming the “More Info” button to direct you to the right fix. Here are the steps you can take to finally rid yourself of this pop-up:
Fix Java Command-Line Tool Pop-Up on Mac OS X
- Download Java for OS X 2017-001 aka Apple’s version of Legacy Java Command-line tool.
- Mount the .dmg disk image file and install Java 6 runtime for OS X.
- Restart your Mac and enjoy the absence of this Java command-line tool error pop-up!

Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ, originally Macintosh Runtime for Java) was Apple's proprietary virtual machine for Java-based applications in the classic Mac OS (i.e. versions prior to Mac OS X). Both a runtime environment and a software development kit (SDK) are available.
The runtime environment includes a JIT compiler developed by Symantec, the standard Java class library from Sun, additional classes providing Macintosh-specific functionality, and the Apple Applet Runner (a lightweight application for running Java applets without the overhead of a web browser). A number of web browsers could use MRJ to run Java applets in web pages, including MicrosoftInternet Explorer, iCab and HotJava.
The SDK includes ports of most of the tools from Sun's Java Development Kit (in the form of MPW tools and Macintosh applications), additional tools for packaging Java applications as double-clickable Macintosh applications, libraries for Macintosh-specific functionality, and documentation for the MRJ-specific classes and tools.
MRJ v2.2.5 was compatible with Sun's Java Development Kit version 1.1.8.[1]
Since the transition to Mac OS X, Apple has discontinued MRJ and instead maintains and distributes a port of Oracle'sHotSpot Java virtual machine.[citation needed]
